Designing Indoor to Outdoor Spaces
Thursday Jul 10 2025

Learn how to design an indoor space that feels effortlessly connected to the outside world—without knocking down a single wall.

This time of year, having a natural connection between your indoor and outdoor spaces is a design priority! Whether you’re hosting a backyard dinner party or simply enjoying a quiet morning with the doors open, creating a natural flow between your home and the outdoors can dramatically enhance your daily life.

Five Ways to Create a Seamless Connection from the Indoors, Out

1. Use a Consistent Color Palette

Bring the outdoor hues in! This is one of the easiest ways to create continuity between your spaces. Simply pick tones you see outside (sage green, sky blue, sandy neutrals, earthy terracotta, etc.) and repeat them inside.

Try adding throw pillows, artwork, or rugs in shades that mimic your exterior surroundings. The result is a space that feels intentionally connected and cohesive.

2. Incorporate Natural Materials

Bring in organic textures. A few of our favs right now:

  • rattan
  • wood
  • linen
  • jute
  • stone

These finishes will visually tie your interior to the exterior. A woven pendant light, a teak coffee table, or even a stone accent piece can subtly nod to nature outside your window.

At The Black Goose Design, we always recommend pairing natural pieces with crisp, clean-lined furniture to strike the perfect balance between cozy and fresh.

3. Choose Furniture That Works Hard in Both Spaces

Indoor-outdoor furniture has come a long way in both style and comfort. We love using pieces that can live in either space, like performance-fabric sofas, teak chairs, and concrete accent tables. This flexibility makes summer entertaining a breeze—just move a few things around and your party can spill outside with ease.

Bonus: Performance fabrics resist fading in the sun and are easy to clean, which makes them perfect even if your “outdoor space” is just an open window or patio door.

4. Use Lighting to Extend the Day

If your indoor space opens to a patio or deck, don’t forget about lighting! Layering warm, ambient lighting inside with fire pits, string lights, or lanterns outside helps visually link the two spaces and allows you to enjoy the transition well into the evening.

We’re especially partial to dimmable table lamps, which let you set the mood indoors without overpowering the soft glow of the outdoors.

5. Keep the Doorway Open (Literally and Visually)

Sliding doors, French doors, or even wide windows can act as the literal bridge between your indoor and outdoor areas. But even if you’re working with a standard door, keeping the area around it clear of clutter and styling it with intention can help it feel like a natural part of your living space.

Try a neutral-toned rug that runs from inside to just outside the door, or matching planters on either side to draw the eye out.
